(BLOOMINGTON) - The FBI recently released their annual Hate Crime Statistics report, and the Bloomington Police Department learned that the number of hate crimes reported across the country rose by 17 percent during 2017.
While the increase in the FBI statistics can partly be attributed to 1,000 additional agencies which have recently started reporting hate crime data to the FBI, it's a figure that many may find troubling and discouraging.
Bloomington Police Department is committed to transparency of their local data and not only reports hate crimes to the FBI but has been voluntarily publishing quarterly data on hate and bias-motivated crimes online since 2016.
"We recently joined the Police Data Initiative which encourages other law enforcement agencies to join in the effort to "fight hate with data," says Chief Michael Diekhoff. "This transparency makes it possible for the public to take a firsthand look at the local data and to understand how our local incidents compare with national statistics such as this most recent news."
