(ORLEANS) - The Orleans High School Spell Bowl team conquered all challengers in area competition at Austin High School on Monday, October 29. The team’s score of 58 (of 90 possible) earned the spellers blue ribbons in Class 4, the overall championship at the site, and a spot in the State Finals.
Orleans senior, Nicholas Hester, received a Near Perfect ribbon for correctly spelling eight of his nine words.
Members of the team are Lilly Blair, Cathryn Carlisle, Makenna Hall, Nicholas Hester, Annie Johnson, Hope Jordan, Hunter Morgan, Jailynne Radcliff, Dylan Reid, Michael Reid, and Jace Roach. Kristina Hole and Leah Morgan are the team's coaches.
Austin was one of several area competition sites around the state. The top five scores in each class determined the qualifiers for the State Finals of the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Senior Division sponsored by the Indiana Association of School Principals and Purdue University. In Class 4, Orleans earned a spot in the finals with a third-place finish.

The Orleans spellers will travel to West Lafayette on Saturday, November 10, to compete in the 34th annual Spell Bowl State Finals. The competition will begin at 11 a.m. in the Loeb Playhouse on the Purdue University campus. Other Class 4 teams competing at Purdue will be Barr-Reeve, Washington Township (Valparaiso), Northeast Dubois, and Riverton Parke (Montezuma).
This version of the traditional spelling bee consists of 10 rounds of 9 words. A member of each team spells all the words in a round in writing as they are pronounced. A team earns a point for each word its member spells correctly. A different team member competes for his or her school each round. Teams are divided into four classes by school size: Jennings County and Seymour competed in Class 1; Madison in Class 2; Austin, Brownstown Central, and Southwestern in Class 3; and Orleans, Shawe Memorial, and Henryville competed in Class 4 at Austin.
