Lawrence County sheriff deputies arrested 28-year-old Robert Schofield of Bedford on a level 5 felony of domestic battery on a person under the age of 14-years-old.

According to a Lawrence Superior Court I probable cause affidavit, a Lawrence County Sheriff's Department detective was contacted by a Department of Child Services caseworker on Sept. 10th that Schofield allegedly had injured a child.

The child's mother told police she went to work in Seymour at 3 a.m. on Sept. 6, leaving her 2-year-old son in the care of Schofield, her husband. The woman told police this was the first time she had let Schofield watch the toddler for an extended period of time.

When she came home from work, she bathed her son and noticed he had bruising and redness on his bottom. When she asked Schofield about the bruises, Schofield claimed the child fell on stairs after running out the front door. A doctor later examined the toddler and determined the bruising "was not consistent" with a fall down the stairs. Another doctor, with the Indiana University Health Hospital Pediatric Evaluation and Diagnostic Program in Indianapolis, said it appeared "some sort of implement" was used.

Schofield was arrested and is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a $2,005 cash or $20,000 surety bond.
