(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University student was arrested after a woman claims he bound her with duct tape and raped her in an apartment after a night of drinking.
Bloomington Police found the 21-year-old woman barefoot and wearing only a blue sweatshirt in the 100 block of East Sixth Street early Friday morning, according to Bloomington Police Capt. Steve Kellams.
Police began looking for the woman after her friend called police at 4:45 a.m. on Nov. 30th reporting they had received a call from her saying she was lost downtown. While looking for the woman police received a call from a store clerk at the Village Pantry on East Winslow Road saying they saw a woman walking with only a sweatshirt on and no pants.
Police located the woman on North Sixth Street.
Capt. Kellams says the woman was apprehensive and just kept saying she wanted to go home.
Officers took the woman to her home, but not before encouraging her to seek medical treatment and take a rape kit. The woman did that later in the day, Capt. Kellams added.
The woman filed a report on December 2. She told police she and her coworkers went out on Nov. 29 to celebrate her 21st birthday. The group went to multiple bars. At Brothers Bar & Grill she met 22-year-old Gregory Danielson.
The woman told police she and Danielson had worked together but were not close friends.
After talking to Danielson for a while, her memory began to get hazy. The next thing she remembered was waking up in Danielson's apartment and feeling sick and Danielson raping her.
The woman told police her hands were bound with duct tape and when she went to scream she realized her mouth also was taped shut.
After raping the woman, she says Danielson removed the duct tape and told her to go to sleep. The woman says she laid in the bed pretending to sleep until Danielson fell asleep and she was able to grab only her blue sweatshirt and sneak out of the apartment, leaving behind her other belongings.
She encountered a stranger and asked to use their cell phone and called her friend who then called the police.
Police located Danielson and he came to the station for an interview. He told police he was kissing the woman at Brothers and told the woman he had to work the next morning and was going to leave. He says the woman asked to go home with him. Danielson then hauled an Uber and the two went to his apartment in the 2780 block of South Walnut Street Pike.
Once at the apartment, Danielson claims the woman threw up on herself, got naked in the bathroom and showered. Danielson told officers he fell asleep, and when he woke up, the woman was gone and they did not have sex.
Detectives searched Danielson's apartment and found rolls of duct tape by the bed and torn pieces in a trash can by the bed. When asked about the tape, Danielson says he had used the tape to tie women up in the past, but not the alleged victim.
But during the interview Danielson repeatedly changed his story, saying the two had consensual sex and she agreed to be tied up.
Police arrested Danielson on a charge of rape.
