(BEDFORD) - Thefts from vehicles continue to be a problem in the Lawrence County area.
It isn't just unlocked cars parked on the street overnight that make it easy for thieves. Break-ins are also happening in broad daylight.
And with the holidays approaching, the number of incidents is expected to increase.
And if you think hiding valuables under your seat is keeping them safe, think again.
It only takes seconds for a theft to happen.
More often than not, police say those thefts could have been prevented.
Officers say don't keep valuables or Christmas gifts in unlocked vehicles.
Lock the doors or put the items in the trunk.
Car break-ins also happen at night. Thieves often walk streets and parking lots checking doors. Open ones make for quick and easy targets.
'Tis the season for colder temperatures, meaning an increase of car thefts. Police call it a 'crime of chance'. For criminals, it's easy. They walk by, see no one around, try the door and drive away in a stolen car. It only takes seconds.
