(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Indians opened their season with a 6-1 win over the Columbus Clippers Thursday afternoon at Victory Field.
Nyjer Morgan went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in his triple-a debut. Carlos Maldonado added a two-run single and Freddy Sanchez, the 2006 National League batting champion, went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Sanchez is on a rehab assignment from Pittsburgh.
Sean Burnett pitched five shutout innings to pick up the win. Larry Broadway accounted for the Clippers' lone run with a solo homer in the sixth.
Game two of the four-game series is tonight at Victory Field.
