(WEST LAFAYETTE, IN) - The Purdue women’s basketball program will lose two scholarships for the 2007-08 season after the NCAA determined a former assistant coach and a former player committed academic fraud and then lied to about it.
Former Assistant Coach Katrina Merriweather also received a three-year "show cause" penalty, meaning any school wanting to hire Merriweather in the next three years will also have to go before the committee on infractions.
Merriweather was found to have helped former Purdue player Cherelle George research and write a class paper. Merriweather was also found to have made 105 improper phone calls to recruits. Both are considered major infractions by the NCAA.
Merriweather and George were both suspended on the eve of the 2006 Big Ten Tournament with George Latter being declared ineligible.
Merriweather's contract was terminated when former head coach Kristy Curry left for Texas Tech following the 2006 season.
Curry did not receive any penalties, but the infractions committee said it was concerned about curry's dismissal of the allegations when she conducted her on inquiry. Purdue was also placed on probation for the next two years.
