(WEST LAFAYETTE, IN) - Purdue Assistant Basketball Coach Cuonzo Martin has been promoted to associate head coach.
Martin is entering his eighth season with the program after being hired by former coach Gene Keady in the summer of 2000.
Martin played for Keady from 1991 to 1995 and currently ranks eleventh on the school's all-time scoring list. He played professionally for four years, including brief stints in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Vancouver Grizzlies.
His pro career was cut short by four knee surgeries and a successful battle with non-hodgkin's lymphoma. Martin's cancer was in remission when Keady hired him in 2000.
Head coach matt painter released a statement saying that Martin was deserving of the promotion and that he will be an excellent head coach in the near future.
Painter and Martin were teammates with the Boilermakers from 1991 through 1993.
