(SOUTH BEND, IN) - Notre Dame Football Coach Charlie Weis is expected to announce today his starter at quarterback for Saturday’s game against USC.
Freshman Jimmy Clausen has started the last five games, leading The Fighting Irish to just three offensive touchdowns. Junior Evan Sharpley has replaced Clausen in losses to Purdue and Boston College, rallying the Irish in the second half to make those games close. Notre dame is 1-and-6 this season.
The Trojans have been ranked number one for much of the season before a loss at home to Stanford two weeks ago dropped them to ninth in the coaches' poll.
Notre dame offensive lineman Matt Carufel has withdrawn from school. The 6-5, 295-pound sophomore started three games at right guard for The Fighting Irish after Dan Wenger was injured against Michigan.
Carufel lost the starting job to Eric Olsen before the UCLA game and was not at practice or the loss to Boston College last week. Weis said he talked to Carufel on Sunday and was informed of his decision to leave the team and withdraw from Notre Dame.
