(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year on Monday.
Sanders is the first Colt and the fourth safety to receive the honor in the 37-year history of the award. The 5-8, 206-pounder out of the University of Iowa has been the key member of a defense which allowed the fewest points in the league this season.
Sanders recorded 132 tackles this past regular season, second on the team to middle linebacker Gary Brackett.
He was recently rewarded with a new five-year, 37-and-a-half-million dollar contract.
