(PHOENIX, AZ) - Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders has claimed another defensive player of the year honor.
Sanders was named the GMC Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday, beating out San Diego cornerback Antonio Cromartie, Seattle defensive end Patrick Kerney, New England linebacker Mike Vrabel and Houston defensive end Mario Williams in fan balloting on the NFL's website.
More than 242-thousand votes were received at NFL.com during the balloting, which took place from January 7th through the 23rd.
The fourth-year pro out of Iowa recorded 96 tackles, three and-a-half sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery as part of a defense that allowed the fewest points in the NFL in 2007.
Sanders had his arm in a sling as he was making the rounds at the Super Bowl on Thursday. He says he had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and should be wearing the sling for three to four weeks as a precaution.
Sanders says the surgery was to clean things out in the shoulder and that he will be ready in plenty of time for next season. He said if the Colts had made the Super Bowl, he would have been able to play with the shoulder injury.
Sanders made the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career this season, but had to withdraw due to the shoulder injury.
