(INDIANAPOLIS) - Scott Dixon has the pole for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
The New Zealander survived an attempt from Ganassi Racing teammate Dan Wheldon to claim his first ever pole at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a four-lap average of 226.366MPH. Wheldon withdrew a time that was good for a start on the outside of row one, and improved it to 226.110MPH to move past Ryan Briscoe and into second place on the provisional grid.
The two Penske cars will start behind the two Ganassi cars with Briscoe third and Helio Castroneves fourth.
Three Andretti cars show up next on the grid with Danica Patrick starting on the inside of row two with Tony Kanaan on the outside.
Marco Andretti will start seventh, followed by Vitor Meira, Hideki Mutoh, Ed Carpenter, and Tomas Scheckter to round out Saturday's eleven qualifiers.
Positions 12-22 will be determined today weather permitting, as there is rain in the forecast.
