(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Today is a day off for 32 of the 33 drivers in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.
The Firestone Indy Lights cars will be on the two and-a-half-mile oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today practicing and qualifying for Friday's Freedom 100.
Jeff Simmons is the only driver doing double duty this weekend. Simmons will start from the outside of row eight on Sunday. He is currently twelfth in the Indy Lights points standings.
Castroneves Making A Move To NASCAR?
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves says he is completely focused on winning for a third time and is not pondering a move to NASCAR. A report in the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday said that Castroneves was considering following former 500 winners Dario Franchitti, Sam Hornish Jr. and Juan Pablo Montoya to the sprint cup series.
The 2001 and 2002 Indy winner tells The Indianapolis Star that he has things to accomplish in the IndyCar series and that he does not think that there is an opportunity for him in NASCAR. Castroneves' contract with Team Penske is up at the end of this season.
Yamaguchi To Wave Starting Flag
Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi will serve as the honorary starter for Sunday's Indianapolis 500.
The champion figure skater, who won the latest "Dancing With The Stars" competition earlier this week, is the first woman to serve as honorary starter.
She replaces boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., another "Dancing With The Stars" competitor, who was forced to drop out due to a death in his family.
