(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Neither AJ Foyt IV, Buddy Lazier nor Marty Roth made it look easy, but all three bumped their way into the field for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
Foyt qualified shortly after the track opened, bumping Roth from the field. Foyt would later crash his qualified car in turn three, suffering minor burns to the back of his neck.
Roth went out about an hour and a half later and knocked Lazier out of the field. Lazier struggled getting his #91 Dallara up to speed, but the 1996 Indy winner found what he needed with less than 15 minutes remaining, knocking Mario Dominguez out of the field. Roth finished time trials on the bubble with a speed of 218.965 miles per hour.
Dominguez and Max Papis were long shots to make the field after crashing their cars on Saturday. Dominguez made three qualifying attempts on Sunday. The first attempt was too slow and the second put him into the field until he was bumped by Buddy Lazier. On the third attempt, Dominguez recorded a speed of 219.780 miles per hour but lost control and crashed in turn one on his second lap, ending qualifications.
Papis managed to get to the head of the qualifying line, but a clutch problem contributed to his car stalling twice and he never got out to make an attempt.
Phil Giebler was released from Methodist Hospital on Sunday. Giebler was hospitalized with bruised lungs when he backed into the turn one safer barrier hard on Saturday. Giebler also suffered a neck sprain in the wreck and was not cleared to drive.
