(UNDATED) - The 2008 Major League Baseball amateur draft begins today in Florida and could prominently feature an Indiana player.
Greensburg High School senior Alex Meyer is projected as one of the top pitchers available to teams. The 6-foot-7 right-hander is 7-and-0 this season with a 0.95 ERA and 91 strikeouts in less than 45 innings.
Some services consider Meyer one of the top handful of players in this draft, but teams may shy away from Meyer. He has a scholarship awaiting him at the University of Kentucky and he is being advised by Scott Boras, a noted baseball agent who is a tough negotiator and has frequently advised players not to sign and re-enter the draft for more money.
The Tampa Bay Rays have the number one overall pick for the second straight year. The Pittsburgh Pirates, the major league affiliate of the Indianapolis Indians, select second, followed by Kansas City, Baltimore, and San Francisco in the top five.
