(CHARLOTTE, NC) - South Bend native Ryan Newman will race for fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart during the 2009 Sprint Cup season according to an internet report.
ESPN.com reported Wednesday that Newman has reached a verbal agreement to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing next season. An announcement could be up to a month away as negotiations continue for car sponsors.
Stewart joins the current Haas/CNC Racing team next season as a co-owner as well as a driver.
Newman announced earlier this month that he would not be back with Penske Racing next season and has reportedly been pursued by Evernham Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing and Petty Enterprises.
One candidate to replace Newman at Penske is another South Bend native - David Stremme.
