(CHEYENNE, WY) - Penske Racing will go with backup cars this weekend at Infineon Speedway in Sonoma, California after the primary cars of Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe were destroyed in a transporter fire Wednesday in Wyoming.
The fire also claimed the team's uniforms and most of their equipment for this weekend's IndyCar Series race. There were no injuries in the fire.
The team's backup cars were already in Sonoma for a test last week with Briscoe. Penske Racing has dispatched another transporter from the team's headquarters in Mooresville, North Carolina to pick up the two drivers from the first truck and drop off additional employees to sift through the debris left by the fire.
The second transporter also contains two cars, but those cars reportedly are set up for oval-track racing and will be used only for spare parts, as well as additional uniforms and equipment for this weekend's race.
Castroneves is one of four drivers still in contention for the IndyCar Series championship. He is second in points, 78 behind series leader Scott Dixon.
