(BEIJING, CHINA) - Former Indiana University sprinter David Neville won the bronze medal in the 400-meters at the Olympics in Beijing.
Neville completed a sweep for the United States with Lashawn Merritt beating defending champion Jeremy Warner by almost a full second for the gold. Neville did a head-first dive across the finish line to claim third with a time of 44.80.
The Americans also swept the medals in the 400 at Athens four years ago.
Neville, a native of Merrilville, is the first IU athlete to win an individual track and field medal at the Olympics since Willie May won silver in the 110-meter hurdles at Rome in 1960. He is the first IU track and field athlete to win a medal of any kind since 1984.
Neville will compete in the four-by-400-meter relay today.
