(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - Indiana University released its response to the NCAA’s “failure to monitor” charge against the men’s basketball program on Monday.
In the response, the university says its compliance system exceeded standard practices and that it met the obligation for monitoring a coach with a history of rule-breaking.
In the response, the university says the "failure to monitor" charge is unwarranted because former head coach Kelvin Sampson and former assistant coach Rob Senderoff withheld information and attempted to conceal impermissible phone calls from the university's compliance department.
The charge is one of five major violations the NCAA committee on infractions has levied against IU in the wake of Indiana's 2006 hiring of Sampson. Sampson's contract was bought out by the university last February.
Indiana turned in the response to the NCAA last Friday. The other four charges involve the actions of Sampson and Senderoff.
Sampson had made impermissible phone calls to recruits while he was head coach at the University of Oklahoma, a practice that he is accused of continuing while with the Hoosiers. The committee on infractions heard testimony on those charges last June in Seattle. A decision on the charges could come as early as next month.
