(UNDATED) - In men’s college basketball, the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame survived a late scare from number-seven Texas, defeating the Longhorns 81-80 in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.
Luke Harangody led the Irish with 29 points and eleven rebounds with Kyle McAlarney finishing with 19 points and Tory Jackson adding 16. AJ Abrams led Texas with 23 points and almost gave the Longhorns the win, but his desperation heave from beyond halfcourt as time expired bounced off the front of the rim.
Notre Dame advances to the finals where they will face top-ranked North Carolina. The Tar Heels defeated Oregon last night to reach the finals.
Hoosiers Fall To St. Joe's
The Indiana Hoosiers fell to 2-and-2 with their 80-54 loss to St. Joseph's in the Maui Invitational. Darrin Govins led the Hawks with 23 points, primarily on the strength of 7-for-9 shooting from three-point range. Ahmad Nivins added 18 points as St. Joe's used a 19-0 run early in the second half to even its record at 2-and-2.
Malik Story led the Hoosiers with nine points and Verdell Jones added eight as the Hoosiers committed 23 turnovers leading to 34 points by the hawks. The Hoosiers will close out their games in Hawaii this evening when they face the host Silverswords of Chaminade.
Mastodons Run Over IU East
In last night's action on the mainland, the IPFW Mastodons had little trouble with IU East, dispatching the Red Wolves 79-36 at Memorial Coliseum.
Nick Daniels, Ben Botts, David Carson and Deilvez Yearby led the 2-and-2 Dons with eleven points each. Cory Sitton led IU East with eight points as the Red Wolves fall to 7-and-4.
The Dons are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Eastern Illinois for a rematch with the panthers. IPFW beat Eastern Illinois in overtime last Saturday in Fort Wayne.
IUPUI Jags Top Eastern Illinois
Alex Young scored 20 points and Leroy Nobles added 19 as the IUPUI Jaguars beat Eastern Illinois 67-60 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Billy Pettiford added eleven points as the Jaguars improve to 3-and-2 and run their home winning streak to 18 games. Tyler Laser led the Panthers with 17 points as EIU falls to 1-and-3.
The Jaguars hit the road Saturday to face Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.
Cardinals Continue Regular Season Winning Streak
The Ball State Cardinals are off to a 3-and-1 start after defeating Wisconsin-Milwaukee 82-69 on the road.
Freshman Jarrod Jones led the Cardinals with 18 points. Brandon Lampley added 15 points with Anthony Newell finishing with 14 points and twelve rebounds.
Anthony Hill led the Panthers with 17 points and Ricky Franklin added 15 as UWM drops to 3-and-3.
The Cardinals return to Muncie to face Arkansas State on Saturday.
Wednesday NCAA Hoosier Hoops Schedule
On tonight's college basketball schedule, ninth-ranked Purdue faces Boston College in the semifinals of the NIT season tip-off at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The Boilers are off to a 4-and-0 start while the Eagles lost their last time out, falling to Saint Louis last weekend to drop to 3-and-1.
The Butler Bulldogs face the Northwestern Wildcats at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Both teams are 3-and-0.
The Indiana State Sycamores will try to find the win column as they host the Racers of Murray State. The Sycamores are 0-and-2 while the Racers are 2-and-1.
