(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The NCAA has placed Indiana University on three years probation for recruiting violations committed by former men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and the university’s failure to monitor Sampson’s program.
The infractions committee found IU's self-imposed sanctions to be sufficient and did not levy any new penalties. Indiana will not be subjected to a postseason ban.
The school took away one basketball scholarship and imposed recruiting restrictions on Sampson and his staff. Those restrictions were inherited by current coach Tom Crean and his staff.
The NCAA saved its harshest penalties for Sampson and former IU assistant Rob Senderoff. Sampson was given a five-year "show cause" penalty while Senderoff was handed a three-year "show cause" penalty.
A "show cause" penalty effectively bans someone from working for an NCAA program as the university must receive NCAA approval before being allowed to hire a coach under a "show cause" restriction.
Sampson is currently an assistant coach for the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks and is not currently under the NCAA's jurisdiction.
It is not clear how the ruling will effect Senderoff, who was hired as an assistant coach at Kent State last spring.
The recruiting violations stemmed from more than 100 impermissible cell phone calls made by Sampson and his staff. Sampson was already on probation for similar offenses committed while he was the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.
