Colts Sign Veteran Running Back... Just In case

Last updated on Thursday, December 11, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts were back at practice Wednesday getting ready for their Sunday meeting with the winless Detroit Lions.

Running backs Joseph Addai and Chad Simpson missed practice with injuries suffered in last weekend's win over Cincinnati, so the Colts have signed veteran running back Najeh Davenport.

Davenport is a seven-year NFL veteran who has played for the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former University of Miami product has also returned kickoffs, a job Simpson has been doing lately.

To make room for Davenport on the roster, the Colts waived former Indiana State tight end Jamie Petrowski.

Lions Injury Report

Lions Coach Rod Marinelli says quarterback Daunte Culpepper is "more doubtful than probable" for Sunday's game. Culpepper has started Detroit's last five games and suffered a shoulder injury late in the Lions' loss to Minnesota last Sunday.

Drew Henson finished the game at quarterback last week, but Marinelli might have a couple more options as he gets a pair of quarterbacks back from injury. Dan Orlovsky, who started four games this season, worked out in practice on a limited basis Wednesday as he comes back from a broken thumb on his throwing hand. Drew Stanton practiced Wednesday as he returns from a concussion.
