(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The first domino in planning the 2009 season for the Indianapolis Colts has fallen as Head Coach Tony Dungy announced that he will step down as head coach.
Dungy returned to Indianapolis on Sunday to discuss his future with Colts Owner Jim Irsay and announced his decision at a press conference Monday evening.
Dungy has contemplated retirement following the past five seasons, taking a week following the Colts final game to make an unemotional decision.
He has led the Colts to the playoffs in each of his seven seasons as head coach, with a winning record of 92 wins and 33 losses and led the Colts to their Super Bowl XLI victory following the 2006 season.
Dungy spent the past season commuting to Tampa on weekends to be with his family and to watch his son play high school football. Irsay loaned Dungy his private plane to make the trips to Florida easier during the season.
Dungy has also said that when he retires from football, he expects the retirement to be permanent as he plans to devote himself to the religious and charitable organizations he has supported during his career as a coach.
Associate Head Coach Jim Caldwell will be Dungy's replacement as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
