(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts announced the resignation of defensive coordinator Ron Meeks on Tuesday.
Meeks held the position throughout the Tony Dungy era, taking over as defensive coordinator with Dungy's arrival in Indianapolis in 2002.
The defense has had its ups and downs during Meeks' reign and was a key factor in the Colt's run to the 2006 Super Bowl championship after ranking last in the league against the run that season.
In 2008, the Colts ranked eleventh in total defense - 24th against the run and sixth against the pass. The defense allowed just six touchdown passes, the fewest in the NFL since the league expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978.
Meeks reportedly interviewed for the vacant head coaches' job with the New York Jets two weeks ago and was considered a candidate to succeed Dungy with the Colts before Caldwell was designated Dungy's successor last year.
Meeks' departure leaves two openings on new Head Coach Jim Caldwell's staff. he Colts announced last week that they would not renew the contract of long-time special teams coach Russ Purnell.
Caldwell did name Frank Reich as the team's quarterbacks coach last Tuesday as the former Buffalo Bills backup quarterback assumed Caldwell's old duties.
