(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The NFL free agent signing period begins on Friday and it appears that the Indianapolis Colts will let three-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday test the waters, according to a published report.
Saturday's agent, Ralph Cindrich, told The Indianapolis Star that the team will allow Saturday to test the free agent market.
Saturday has been the Colts' starting center for nine seasons. He missed four games last season with a knee injury suffered during preseason followed by a calf injury early in the season.
Cindrich says that depending on the interest that is shown by other teams, there is still a possibility that Saturday could return to the Colts. He is one of eight Indianapolis players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on February 27th.
Money to re-sign free agents is tight after the Colts locked up starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden with a five-year, $43-million dollar contract last week.
One much-discussed method of freeing up some cap space would be releasing veteran wide receiver Marvin Harrision, who is coming off his two least-productive seasons as a pro. Harrison is signed through the 2011 season.
Team President Bill Polian told reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Sunday that he is working on restructuring Harrison's contract. If Harrison decides against taking a pay cut, the Colts would be forced to keep him at his current salary cap number or to release him.
Releasing Harrison would save the colts approximately $6-million dollars toward their 2009 cap number.
