(MIAMI) - Two-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Helio Castroneves is due in federal court today as his trial on federal tax evasion charges is scheduled to get underway in Miami.
The affable Brazilian is accused of diverting 5.5 million dollars to a Panamanian company to avoid paying U.S. income taxes.
Castroneves and his sister Kati, who also served as his business manager, were indicted in November on six counts of tax evasion and one count of fraud.
Castroneves was not present at last week's IndyCar series test at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
His familiar number-three car was driven by Will Power, who has been hired by Team Penske as a test driver and a fill-in should Castroneves be unable to compete.
