Chappell To Serve As IU Quarterback, Lewis As Wide Receiver

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - Indiana University opens spring football practice today with Ben Chappell as the designated starting quarterback and Kellen Lewis moving to wide receiver.

Head Coach Bill Lynch announced the changes at a news conference on Monday, saying he wants to have both Chappell and Lewis on the field at the same time. The two split time at quarterback last season after Lewis missed all of spring practice due to a suspension.

Lewis completed 57 percent of his passes in 2008, throwing for 1,131 yards and six touchdowns while missing two games with an ankle injury. Chappell completed 52 percent of his tosses, throwing four 1,001 yards with four TD's.

Lynch says that Adam Follett and Teddy Schell will serve as Chappell's backups at quarterback.

Lewis could also see some time at tailback as IU looks to replace last season's leading rusher Marcus Thigpen. Thigpen rushed for 661 yards last season while Lewis ran for 600 yards as a quarterback and from various other positions with Chappell on the field.
