(UNDATED) - In women’s basketball tournament play, Jantel Lavender hit one of two free throws with six seconds remaining to give Ohio State a 67-66 victory over Purdue in the championship game of the Big Ten tournament.
Lavender, the Big Ten player of the year in each of her two seasons with the Buckeyes, led all scorers with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Star Allen added 13 points as the twelfth-ranked Buckeyes improve to 27-and-5 and earns an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.
Brittany Rayburn led Purdue with 20 points with Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton adding 15 as the Boilermakers fall to 22-and-10. Purdue is expected to earn an NCAA at-large berth when the selections are made one week from tonight.
Villanova used an 18-8 run at the start of the second half to pull away and defeat number-17 Notre Dame 58-47 in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament.
Laura Kurz led the Wildcats with 21 points and eleven rebounds with Lisa Karcic adding eleven points as Villanova advances to the semifinals where they will face number-one Connecticut.
Melissa Lechlitner and Ashley Barlow scored ten points apiece for the Fighting Irish, who fall to 22-and-8 as they wait for NCAA tournament selections next Monday.
