Despite Good Play By Meche, Sox's Thome Clubs One Off Royals' Closer For Win

Last updated on Wednesday, April 8, 2009

(CHICAGO, IL) - Jim Thome’s three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 4-2 opening-day win over the Kansas City Royals.

Thome's shot off Kansas City reliever Kyle Farnsworth erased a standout performance by Royals starter Gil Meche.

Meche allowed a run on seven hits over seven innings and did not figure in the decision. Josh Fields drove in Chicago's other run with a game-tying RBI single in the second.

Alex Gordon had given KC the early lead with a solo homer off White Sox starter Mark Buehrle in the second and gave the Royals another lead with an RBI fielder's choice grounder in the fifth.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for tonight.
