(ST. LOUIS, MO) - Jayson Werth hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth and Ryan Howard broke the game open with a fifth-inning grand slam as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1.
Joe Thurston put St. Louis on the scoreboard in the third with a ground-rule double that scored Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse from second. Lohse could not hold the lead, giving up the two home runs as he allowed six runs on seven hits in just four and a third innings of work.
Joe Blanton picked up the win for Philadelphia to improve to 1-2. St. Louis centerfielder Rick Ankiel was taken off the field on a cart in the eighth inning after slamming head-first into the left-centerfield wall.
Ankiel was immobilized but did give the "thumbs-up" sign as he was being carted off.
