(UNDATED) - Shingo Katayama’s loss is David Erdy’s gain.
Katayama withdrew from the US open Monday due to an injury to his upper back.
That opens up a spot in the field for Erdy.
The Indiana University sophomore heads to Bethpage bBlack in New York this morning to participate in his first PGA major at age 19.
Erdy earned first alternate status by winning a six-man playoff at the sectional qualifier in Dayton, Ohio last week.
He will be one of 15 amateurs in the US open field when play begins on Thursday.
Erdy is a native of Boonville, Indiana and prepped at castle high school.
