(SAN DIEGO, CA) - The St. Louis Cardinals used a big second inning to make a winner of John Smoltz in his Redbirds debut in the Cardinals’ 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Brendan Ryan hit an RBI single, Matt Holliday drew a bases-loaded walk and Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run single in the second as St. Louis scored four times.
Albert Pujols added a solo home run, his 40th of the year, in the fourth to put the Cardinals up 5-0.
Smoltz left after five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out nine and walking none.
The padres would score a pair of runs off the Cardinal bullpen with Adrian Gonzalez hitting an RBI single in the sixth and Nick Hundley adding a solo homer in the seventh.
Smoltz improves to 3 and 5 on the season while San Diego starter Cesar Carrillo took the loss to fall to 1 and 2.
