(SAN FRANSICO, CA) - The Chicago Cubs are on the brink of playoff elimination with their 5-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.
Matt Cain threw eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight to pick up the win for San Francisco and improve to 14 and 7.
Rookie catcher Eli Whiteside drove in two runs for the Giants with Eugenio Velez and Pablo Sandoval adding RBI singles.
Chicago scored its lone run in the ninth on an RBI Triple by Rookie Bobby Scales.
With the win, the Giants remain five games behind Colorado in the Wild Card Race.
The Cubs fall 6 1/2 games behind and one more loss or one more Rockies win will knock them out of the playoff race.
