(CINCINNATI, OH) - Laynce Nix hit his first career grand slam to support a solid pitching effort from Bronson Arroyo as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1.
The Reds scored twice in the second inning when Ryan Hanigan hit an RBI single and Drew Stubbs drew a bases-loaded walk from Cardinals starter John Smoltz.
Nix touched up Smoltz for his grand slam in the third. Albert Pujols drove in St. Louis' lone run in the fourth with an RBI single.
Arroyo went eight and-a-third innings, allowing a run on four hits to improve to 15-and-13.
Smoltz went four innings, allowing six runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts to drop to 3 and 8.
The Cardinals have lost three games in a row since clinching the NL Central.
