(SOUTH BEND, IN) - With the Big Ten putting out feelers for a twelfth member, Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick says the Fighting Irish are fine where they are.
The Irish are currently an independent in football and members of the Big East Conference in their other intercollegiate sports.
Swarbrick tells the Chicago Tribune that independence is a big part of Notre Dame's football tradition and that he would like to maintain that independence.
Notre Dame turned down an invitation to join the Big Ten in 1999.
Other schools that have been mentioned as candidates include Pittsburgh, Rutgers And Missouri.
The main benefit for the Big Ten expanding to twelve teams would be that it would allow the conference to divide into two divisions.
The divisional format would allow the Big Ten to hold a football championship game at the end of the regular season, adding television and ticket revenue for the championship game as well as keeping the conference in the spotlight an extra week between the regular season and the start of postseason bowl games.
