(SOUTH BEND, IN) - Charlie Weis is out as Notre Dame’s head football coach.
Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick announced Weis' firing Monday evening, saying he made his recommendation to University President The Reverend John Jenkins on Sunday night.
The Irish started this season by going 6-2, but lost their final four games to finish the regular season at 6-6.
Weis went 35-27 over five seasons in South Bend, one of the worst tenures among Notre Dame football coaches.
Swarbrick says assistant head coach rob Ianello will run the football operations until a new coach is hired.
The Fighting Irish are bowl eligible and a decision about whether or not the team will participate in a bowl is expected shortly.
