(MARTINSVILLE, VA) - Denny Hamlin was supposed to undergo knee surgery on Monday.
Thanks to some intervention from mother nature, Hamlin was in a race car yesterday winning a wild NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.
Jeff Gordon was yards shy of taking the checkered flag for the win when a crash involving Kyle Busch brought out the yellow, forcing a green - white -checkered finish.
Hamlin got past Gordon, Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth following the restart to claim his second-straight win at Martinsville.
Gibbs Racing teammate Joey Logano wound up second followed by Gordon, Newman and Martin Truex Jr.
Jimmie Johnson finished ninth but takes over the points lead.
Hamlin will have surgery today to repair the ACL tear in his left knee suffered in a pickup basketball game in January.
He has said he will be back for the April 10th race in Phoenix.
