Chris Iannetta led off the ninth by hammering a 3-2 pitch from Evan Maclane over the left field wall for the game-winner.
Maclane was making his major league debut. Matt Holliday went 4 for 4 with a pair of solo home runs and four runs scored in a losing effort for the Cardinals.
The Redbirds fall three games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central.
