(CHICAGO, IL) - Jon Garland pitched seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres blanked the Chicago Cubs 1-0.
The Padres scored the only run of the game in the first inning when Jerry Hairston Junior led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a groundout by Chase Headley.
Garland, Mike Adams and Heath Bell made it stand up, combining on the six-hit shutout.
Garland went seven innings and gave up four hits to improve to 12-8.
Cubs starter Randy Wells allowed a run on three hits in his seven innings of work, falling to 5-11.
