NASCAR Makes Changes To Points System And Chase For The Sprint Cup

Last updated on Thursday, January 27, 2011

(CHARLOTTE, NC) - NASCAR Chairman Brian France announced changes to the points system and the Chase for the Sprint Cup at a news conference Wednesday night in Charlotte.

NASCAR has simplified the points system for races, with the winner earning 43 points for a victory and the last-place driver receiving one point.

The winner will be awarded three bonus points with one bonus point going to drivers who lead a lap and the driver who leads the most laps.

The Chase will still consist of twelve cars, but this year only the top ten in drivers' points will be locked in.

The two remaining spots will be "wild card" berths with the two drivers with the most wins who did not finish in the top ten in points making the chase, provided they are in the top 20 in drivers' points.
