(JUPITER, FL) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright will miss the entire 2011 season.
Wainwright, a 20-game winner in 2010, will undergo ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow.
He felt stiffness in the elbow following a throwing session on Monday.
Wainwright was second to Philadelphia's Roy Halladay in the National League Cy Young award balloting last season.
No date has been scheduled for Wainwright's surgery.
It normally takes a pitcher one year to recover fully from "Tommy John" surgery.
