Kurt Busch Dominates, Takes Checkered Flag At Infineon

Last updated on Monday, June 27, 2011

(UNDATED) - In NASCAR yesterday, Kurt Busch dominated the field at Infineon Raceway and won his first Sprint Cup race of the season.

Busch continued to lead following a restart with 18-laps to go. He was unchallenged during the final laps of the race and crossed the finish line about four-seconds ahead of Jeff Gordon. Points leader Carl Edwards came in third, followed by Clint Bowyer and Marcos Ambrose.

The race featured a number of on-track incidents, and the most notable involved Tony Stewart. Stewart nudged Brian Vickers out of the way on lap-37. Vickers retaliated on lap-87 when he torpedoed Stewart into a stack of tires. The wreck escalated into a seven car pile up that engulfed the 88-car of Dale Earnhardt Junior. Stewart, Vickers, and Junior did not finish the race.

Indiana's Ryan Newman started fifth but finished 25th. Gordon and Newman are teetering on the edge of the "chase" cutoff for automatic invitations. Gordon jumped three spots to ninth while Newman slipped two spots to tenth.

Stewart is twelfth in points and would not qualify for one-of-two wildcards at the moment.

Reed Sorenson won the Nationwide race at Road America Saturday.
