(CINCINNATI, OH) - Ivan Nova threw eight strong innings as the New York Yankees fought off a late Cincinnati rally to beat the Reds 5-3.
The Yankees scored four runs in the first inning off Reds starter Travis Wood, who got the start when Johnny Cueto was scratched with a stiff neck.
Robinson Cano had an RBI double with Alex Rodriguez and Andrew Jones hitting run-scoring singles in the first.
Nova went eight innings, allowing a run on four hits to improve to 7-4.
The Reds rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth, but Mariano Rivera struck out pinch-hitter Edgar Renteria to end the game and pick up his 18th save.
Wood took the loss to fall to 5-5.
