(MARION, IN) - Former Indiana Mister Basketball Billy Shepherd is the new head coach at Marion High School.
The 61-year-old Shepherd, who was Mister Basketball in 1968 at Carmel High School, inherits a storied program that is coming off back-to-back losing seasons. The Giants have won seven state championships in boys basketball, second to Muncie Central's eight.
Todd Grace was fired after two seasons and replaced by former Marion star James Blackmon Senior. One week after being hired, Blackmon decided to return to his job at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.
Shepherd served as interim head coach at Muncie Central during the 2003-04 season, going 20-and-4 and winning a sectional championship. He ranks sixth all-time on the Indiana high school career scoring list with 2,465 points and averaged 27.8 points per game as a sophomore at Butler, the single-season record with the Bulldogs.
