(ANDERSON, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts open training camp at Anderson University today with their franchise cornerstone locked-in for the long term, but the health of Peyton Manning and when the four time MVP can start practicing is an ongoing concern.
The team's outlook for the 2011 season improved dramatically after manning and team executives agreed to a more salary cap friendly contract on Saturday.
The 35-year old signal caller has not fully recovered from neck surgery, however, and questions remain on when he can suit up and begin preparing for the upcoming season.
Manning refuted any desire to become the highest paid player ever in the NFL while meeting with CEO Jim Irsay and team president Bill Polian Thursday in Indianapolis.
They soon agreed to a five year, 90-million dollar contract which freed-up an additional seven million dollars of the 102-million dollar salary cap.
The Colts used their increased negotiating power in free agency to sign running back Joseph Addai, who was headed to the open market until Manning and the Colts signed off on the new contract.
Injury kept Addai on the sidelines for half of the 2010 season, but his exceptional pass blocking skills and Manning's oft injured neck made his retention necessary.
