Cardinals Interview Francona As Search For New Manager Continues

Last updated on Wednesday, November 9, 2011

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The St. Louis Cardinals have interviewed former Boston Manager Terry Francona, according to published reports.

The Cardinals are searching for a replacement for Tony La Russa, who retired last month after the Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers to win the World Series.

Francona met with a search committee including Cardinals Chairman Bill Dewitt Jr. and General Manager John Mozeliak in Cincinnati, where Dewitt lives.

Francona tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he was not given a time frame for a decision.

He has also been rumored to be a candidate for the managerial vacancy with the Chicago Cubs.

The Red Sox declined to exercise the option on Francona's contract for next season after Boston suffered one of the biggest September collapses in baseball history and failed to reach the playoffs.

Last week, St. Louis interviewed Mike Matheny, Chris Maloney and Joe McEwing for the job.

Matheny has not managed at any level while Maloney and McEwing have managed at Triple-A.

Ryne Sandberg and Jose Oquendo are expected to be interviewed by the Cardinals today.
