(HOMESTEAD, FL) - Tony Stewart is a three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion after winning Sunday’s Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Stewart beat Carl Edwards to the checkered flag by just over one second to tie Edwards in points.
Stewart gets the title by virtue of a tiebreaker, winning five races this season to Edwards' one victory.
All five of Stewart's wins came during the ten-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Edwards entered the season finale with a three-point edge on Stewart and won the pole on Saturday.
Stewart qualified 15th and at one point fell all the way back to 40th before catching up to the leaders.
Following a caution for rain, Stewart took the lead for good by passing three cars on the restart with 37 laps remaining.
The Columbus, Indiana resident previously won the crown in 2002 and again in 2005.
He is the first owner-driver to win the Cup since the late Alan Kulwicki in 1992 as he halts Jimmie Johnson's record five-year championship run.
