(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The 2012 Izod IndyCar Series season will not include a race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
IndyCar announced Thursday that considerable testing of the series' new car needs to be done before returning to the mile and a half high banked oval.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway was scheduled to host the 2012 series finale on October 14th, but those plans were clouded by a 15-car accident during last October 16th's race at the track.
Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon was killed in the crash.
The 2012 season opens on a street course in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 25th.
The remainder of the schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
IndyCar had a three-year contract with Las Vegas Motor Speedway's owner, Speedway Motorsports Incorporated.
There have been rumors that the IndyCar Series is exploring closing the season with a race through the streets of Las Vegas.
