(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Jim Caldwell is out as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
Team owner Jim Irsay made the announcement Tuesday afternoon at the team's Westside Indianapolis headquarters, saying it was a difficult decision based on the feeling that this was the direction the franchise needed to go.
General Manager Ryan Grigson says the status of Caldwell's staff is being evaluated and that the new head coach will have input on the selection of assistant coaches.
Caldwell went 26-22 in three seasons as head coach, leading the Colts to the Super Bowl his first year and the playoffs his second season.
He could not overcome this past season's disastrous 0-13 start and 2-14 final record. Grigson did not mention any names when asked about potential candidates to become the team's next head coach.
Grigson says leadership will be the primary thing he is looking for in a new coach and that he is not targeting an offensive-minded head coach over a defensive-minded coach.
There are several former NFLhead coaches available as well as some current coordinators who may be ready to move up.
The first name that usually comes up due to his ties to Grigson is current Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.
The main drawback to Mornhinweg is his 5-27 record in two seasons as Head Coach of the Detroit Lions.
