(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) - Helio Castroneves won Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series season opener through the streets of St. Petersburg.
Castroneves led the final 26 laps and beat Scott Dixon to the finish line by more than five and-a-half seconds to claim his first victory since winning at Motegi, Japan in September of 2010.
During his cool-down lap, Castroneves stopped his car and climbed the catch fence with a sign marking Dan Wheldon Way, paying tribute to the two-time Indianapolis 500 champion who was killed in last year's season finale at Las Vegas.
Ryan Hunter-Reay finished third with James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe rounding out the top five. All but Dixon drove cars powered by Chevrolet engines with Dixon's car powered by Honda.
The IndyCar Series races again on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.
